A few years ago, we were pleased to visit the Museum of Brands. Packaging and products from days gone by proved a great success in triggering memories and discussion as residents recognised some familiar items.
Based on the products, and as an aid to helping those with dementia, or who struggle with memory and/or communication, the Museum has created and tested a Multisensory Memory Box. Training has also been provided for care home staff, including our own Chris, in its use.
Chris kicked off a recent reminiscence session by reading from a war time cook book. As it was designed to do, this brought back memories of residents’ favourite recipes. A packet of Bird’s Custard also prompted a great deal of nostalgic discussion about making trifle and whether you should use swiss roll or a packet of trifle sponges for the base.
An empty box of Typhoo tea led on to the perennial debate as to whether milk goes in the cup first or last.
There was a well-received half time break, with ice cream, before Chris showed round some Lifebuoy soap packaging and a lively discussion erupted again.
